A Dutch designer created an underground fridge that doesn't use electricity:

Now, you can refrigerate without electricity. Dutch designer Floris Schoonderbeek’s Groundfridge reimagines traditional root cellars, offering a sustainable and electricity-free solution for food storage. 

 

Designed for the Dutch brand Weltevree, the spherical fridge is buried underground, leveraging thermal inertia to maintain a constant temperature of 10°C (50°F) year-round. This makes it ideal for storing vegetables, cheese, wine, and other produce without relying on modern appliances.

 

Constructed from lightweight laminated polyester, the Groundfridge resists root intrusion and boasts a storage capacity equivalent to 20 standard refrigerators, holding up to 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) of food. 

 

Highlighted during Dutch Design Week 2015, the Groundfridge combines age-old preservation techniques with modern design, promoting a more self-sufficient and eco-friendly approach to food storage.
