Safe Sleeping Pods for the Homeless in Germany:
In
Ulm, Germany, homeless individuals now have access to specially
designed sleeping pods placed around the city to provide refuge from
harsh weather conditions.
Knows
as "Ulster Nests," the pods are made from wood and steel and protect
against cold, wind, and humidity, accommodating up to two people.
They prioritize
privacy by avoiding the use of cameras and, instead, utilize motion
sensors to notify social workers when the pods are in use, ensuring
they’re properly cleaned and ready for the next users.

The
pods, equipped with solar panels and a radio network for communication
without need for a mobile phone, aim to support individuals who may not
use traditional shelters due to the need to stay with a pet or various
personal reasons.
While
not a substitute for permanent housing, Ulmer Nests serve as an option
to keep people safe from the dangers of sleeping outdoors.
