SpaceX's
Raptor engine series represents a significant leap in rocket propulsion
technology, transitioning from Raptor 1 to the more advanced Raptor 3.
Designed
for SpaceX’s Starship and Super Heavy booster, Raptor engines use a
full-flow staged combustion cycle powered by liquid methane and liquid
oxygen (methalox). This innovative design enhances efficiency and
reusability, supporting SpaceX's long-term vision of interplanetary
travel.
The
development of Raptor engines is rooted in maximizing reliability and
performance, with the ultimate goal of enabling missions to the Moon,
Mars, and beyond while also supporting potential Earth-based
transportation systems.
Raptor
1 laid the groundwork, achieving high thrust and efficiency, but Raptor
2 introduced a complete redesign, simplifying components and
significantly increasing performance. By reducing costs and improving
manufacturability, SpaceX produced Raptor 2 engines at a faster rate
while achieving 230 tonnes of thrust.
The
latest iteration, Raptor 3, takes the design further with a thrust of
280 tonnes and a record-breaking chamber pressure of 350 bar. It
eliminates the need for heat shields and incorporates integral cooling,
making it lighter and more robust.
