The Afar region in East Africa is located at the meeting point of three tectonic plates that are gradually moving away from each other. 

 

As magma rises from deep within the Earth, it is pushing the land apart millimeter by millimeter. Experts believe that if this continues, a completely new ocean could eventually form in this area within the next 5 to 10 million years.
