Japan has taken a big step toward clean energy by installing its first large tidal turbine, the AR1100, in the Naru Strait.

Built by Proteus Marine Renewables, this powerful turbine produces 1.1 megawatts of electricity from ocean currents — enough to help power the Goto Islands in a greener way. The project follows a successful test back in 2021 and shows that tidal energy can be a reliable source of clean power.

What makes the AR1100 special is its advanced design. It can adjust its blades in real-time and connects smoothly to the power grid. This means steady, low-carbon energy without relying on wind or sun.

Proteus is now the first company to run megawatt-scale tidal turbines in both Japan and the UK. They’re also working on tidal projects in Scotland, France, and the US.

This launch proves Japan is serious about clean energy — and it could be a game-changer for ocean-based power around the world.
