OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that people saying “please” and “thank you” to ChatGPT is costing the company tens of millions in computing power. While some experts argue that politeness improves AI responses, the energy impact is real. 
 
A single AI-generated email uses significant electricity, and with AI prompts happening daily at scale, the environmental cost is growing. AI data centers already consume about 2% of global electricity. So, being polite to AI might feel right — but it's adding up fast.
